Allen Jones received eight phone calls from a debt collector seeking to collect a debt Jones had already paid off. Eight threatening, racist, obscene, harassing phone calls. See this link for details.
So Jones hired skilled consumer lawyers (who, like the Consumers Law team, are members of the National Association of Consumer Advocates) to go after the collection firm that had caused him such grief. They brought the case to trial, where the collector's own recordings of the disturbing collection calls were played to the jury.
The jury awarded Jones $50,000 in emotional distress damages and $1,500,000 in punitive damages that it slapped the collector with to send the message that such conduct is not tolerated in a civil society. Congratulations to Mr. Jones for standing up for his rights, and to his lawyers for excellent advocacy.
